Froso Papadimitriou was born in Thessaloniki, Greece where she studied applied arts, illustration/sketching and graphic design. Following completion of her studies she worked as a senior graphic designer for both advertising agencies and magazines and also as a motion graphics designer for various film and video production companies. Along with her professional work she has also collaborated with independent comics publishers as both contributor and editor.
In 2006 she relocated to London to further her education, completing a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Middlesex University and she recently graduated with an MA in Arts Management and Policy, Curatorial and Educational pathway at Birkbeck University of London.
In her art practice, Froso experiments with multiple art forms such as drawing, painting, sculpture, video and installations. Her work explores the binaries that resonate between the self and its role within social environments. Through observation, personal experiences and testimonies - which arise amidst different social mindsets - the work comments on the isolation of the self from public involvement, whilst increasingly interacting with the greater collective assembly and networks.
Her drawing work ranges from humorous social commentary to a floating recording of her experience in identifying her place within social exchanges. Her paintings fluctuate between abstraction and figuration combined frequently with text from print media, and aim to fuel discussions on the eventuality of incidents that occur daily and our involvement as active or passive members of a globalised society, where these incidents are placed. Froso’s thematic approach for her video and installations work focuses on the everyday agonies and concerns of the individual within modernity, presented with a playful, subtle use of symbolism and metaphorical interpretations. In her latest work of thread murals, Froso is exploring the relations between spaces and their attributed identity through historical references, testimonies and memories. Taking as a starting point the resilience of the thread as a material and the idea of trace, she creates semi-visible manifestations of the building’s historical references and memories from the local community.
Froso has collaborated with national and international galleries in UK, Greece, Turkey, Germany, NY, LA, Taiwan, Moscow and Beijing. She has also contributed to various publications in Greece and the UK. Her major shows include: ‘Telephone: A Global Arts Experiment by Satellite Collective’ a New York based project, for which her work was featured in the New York Times; ‘Secret Art for Syria’, a fundraising event at St Ethelburga's Centre in London, where she exhibited along with Hans Ulrich Obrist and Klaus Pinter; ‘(Im)possible school book: As Found’, for which she contributed to a publication and live event at Tate Modern, London.
She is also the organiser and contributor of ‘Tracing my echo’, a travelling exhibition first presented at Tettix Gallery in Thessaloniki, which then journeyed to Zweigstelle Berlin Gallery in Berlin, One Year Gallery in Taipei - where she was invited to give a lecture for the arts department at the National Taiwan University.
Parallel to her artistic endeavours, Froso organises and curates exhibitions and events at various locations nationally and internationally. She worked as Project manager and Curator at Topolski Century Gallery at South Bank and as an Art Teacher for community workshops. She is Co-Director of Collaborative Art, an artist run non-profit organisation focusing on collaborative projects, exhibitions and events.
